Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, along with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Tuesday met members of women self-help groups in Amethi and asked them to make use of several schemes run by the Centre for improving their lot. On a day-long visit to his Parliamentary constituency Amethi, Gandhi told women members to take advantage of several schemes run by the Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna and the Union government for their development.
While grinding poverty remains in Amethi, the Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna, an umbrella body of 1,200 self-help groups, has helped several women feed their families.
'Rahul has done nothing for us. Rajiv Gandhi was different. He was a great man.' In Amethi, each person knows at least five people who have spoken to him, sipped chai with him. It's a connect the Gandhis hope people won't forget when Amethi goes to the polls on May 7.
